Downtown Jones421 Building to add retailer as more spaces become available

Chantale and Charles Connelly are ready to stop hitting the road with their small business and put down retail roots in downtown Sioux Falls.

They began Fig & Fir Resale in 2023 doing summer vendor shows in the area and have a booth at The Black Market, formerly Benson’s Flea Market.

“We just really got to thinking it would be nice to have a more permanent place,” said Chantale Connelly, who left a 35-year career at Citi late last year.

“If we can get the people, we usually have stuff they like.”

The store will offer a range of vintage household items and furnishings. It began with Connelly’s personal collection helping outfit the couple’s home, built in 1890 in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

“I like to shop, and I think I’ve also had an eye for neat things,” she said. “I try to set (the business) up like a boutique.”

She and Charles, who is retired from the trucking industry, travel from Minneapolis to Denver, Omaha to Fargo, sourcing merchandise. When they decided to find a more permanent space for their business, they reached out to broker Bri Kacmarynski of NAI Sioux Falls and committed to the first spot she showed them in the first-floor marketplace of the Jones421 Building at 421 N. Phillips Ave.

It’s a “great fit for their concept,” Kacmarynski said. “Their resale business is a very complementary tenant to the building and aligns well with the community feel among existing tenants. I could easily picture someone grabbing a coffee, browsing the furniture and enjoying the space. Being so close to the Levitt also creates an opportunity to open the rustic green doors and invite in guests heading to or from concerts, adding even more energy to the space.”

They were drawn to the size and openness of the space as well as the history of the building, which dates back to 1909, Connelly said.

They plan to open Sunday, March 1.

“We’re going to make a go of this,” she said. “It’s our fun job.”

Fig & Fir Resale fills the space that most recently was 1st Gen HQ, an artist-driven clothing concept.

“I’m pleased with it,” said Sheila Hazard, building co-owner and property manager. “I think it will pair nicely with Sanctuary Goods.”

Sanctuary Goods, which includes custom jewelry, crystals, health and wellness products and art, opened last year.

Other new additions at Jones421 include Bloom & Branch, a flower and plant shop from Landscape Garden Centers that opened earlier this year.

Spaces for lease include the former Hunnid Stylez Barbershop & Clothing and Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen as the owners have announced they will be leaving the building at the end of the month.

There’s interest in both spaces, Hazard said.

“There’s good traction right now,” she said.
