High winds waylay southern, coastal New Hampshire as nor’easter continues
As of 12:30 p.m.: Monday’s nor’easter hit coastal New Hampshire but the southern half of the state only had to cope with blowing snow and high winds, making travel a hazard. Few power outages or major problems were reported in the state.
In particular, the situation north of Concord is less severe than expected. The National Weather Service said that dry air coming down from the north “eats away at the leading edge” of the storm, dropping the predicted snow totals in central New Hampshire, with almost no accumulation expected north of the Lakes Region.
Relatively few power outages were reported in New Hampshire. The situation was very different in Massachusetts, where more than 300,000 were without power in midday.
Schools, many businesses and many government agencies closed Monday. Speed limits on the Everett Turnpike, Route 101 ad the Spaulding Turnpike have been lowered to 45 mph, with officials urging people to stay home if possible. A number of flights were canceled at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, while Logan Airport in Boston is almost shut down this morning with nearly 1,000 flights canceled, according to the flight tracker site Flight Aware.
Conditions were much worse farther south, with up to two feet of snow reported in coastal areas of New Jersey and southern New England. Power was out on most of Cape Cod, where wind gusts of up to 70 mph have been reported, as well as in scores of locations through Connecticut and Rhode Island. Southern New England states have all declared snow emergencies.
