Snow brings slew of vehicle accidents in Easthampton

EASTHAMPTON — A slew of motor vehicle accidents occurred on Friday once the snow started falling, beginning with a single-motor vehicle crash against the front steps of the Municipal Building located at 50 Payson Ave.

Sgt. Ryan Murphy of the Easthampton Police Department said the crash occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. and was one of the first calls the department received, followed by many similar “minor” accidents.

“It seemed to be a single motor vehicle accident that just went off the road a little bit,” Murphy said about the vehicle that hit the Municipal Building. “I didn’t respond to it myself.”

The Gazette observed minor damages to one of the short, brick walls near the front entrance of the Municipal Building.

Murphy said after accident at 50 Payson Ave., that as of around 2:45 p.m., he had not heard of any major injuries. He said an ambulance was responding to several incidents, but mainly only for standard evaluations.

“In a short amount of time we had a handful of accidents that seemed to be because of the road conditions,” he said.

Murphy said two of those motor vehicle accidents occurred on Ferry Street and appeared minor.

One of the accidents was closer to Lower Mill Pond and the other was up the road further near Parsons Street, he said.

Responding to the accident at 50 Payson Ave., the Gazette saw another motor vehicle accident involving two cars on East Street. Murphy said when weather conditions worsen, it is important for drivers to be cautious.

“It’s all of those usual things,” Murphy said about driving in the snow. “Anybody that has to be on the road, have people give themselves space and drive the appropriate speed for the road conditions. It always takes a little extra time to slow down.”
