Newark Nonprofit Receives $1 Million Federal Grant To Launch Youth STEM Program

United Community Corporation scored $1 million in federal money from U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver’s office. The cash will fund the Youth STEM Innovation and Exploration Program for Newark kids, opening doors to science, technology, engineering, and math.

The program kicks off in the next school year. Some activities start this summer at Essex County West Side Park Community Center. A complete launch happens through after-school programs when fall arrives.

UCC brought McIver in on Feb. 17 for a check presentation at Essex County West Side Park Community Center. Sen. Renee Burgess showed up, along with Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr.

“This investment is about more than technology, it’s about opportunity,” said UCC Executive Director Craig Mainor, according to InsiderNJ.com. “This funding allows us to empower Newark’s young people with the tools, skills, and confidence they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving workforce.”

McIver said the money gives children better chances no matter where they live. “From working in the Newark public school system, I saw firsthand the impact of having the right resources and I’m working every day to deliver those resources and make a difference for the next generation,” said the congresswoman.

The initiative brings hands-on learning through robotics, coding, engineering, and projects that spark new ideas. Local schools and organizations will partner on delivery. Programming connects with classroom lessons but adds enrichment that builds curiosity, creativity, and the ability to solve tough problems.

A main piece weaves STEM learning into UCC’s YouthBuild and NJBUILD programs. These workforce builders give young adults schooling, construction training, and real experience, as they create paths toward jobs and college.

Participants train for construction work while learning engineering ideas and architectural science, deepening their grasp of how science and technology connect with construction careers and skilled trades.

The grant pays for program staff, lesson plans, STEM gear and tech, and materials students need. Money also strengthens school and community ties, widens student access, and funds program reviews to guarantee lasting results.

UCC has served as Newark’s designated Community Action Agency since 1964. Planning work and school partnerships are happening now for fall classes.
