Google Blocks 1.75 Million Malicious Apps From Entering the Play Store

Google has reported significant success in safeguarding the Android ecosystem by preventing over 1.75 million policy-violating apps from reaching the Play Store in 2025.

This marks a decline from 2.36 million the previous year, showing how AI-driven defenses are deterring bad actors early.

The company also banned more than 80,000 developer accounts linked to harmful attempts, raising entry barriers through verification, pre-review checks, and testing mandates.

These efforts target threats like malware, financial fraud, hidden subscriptions, and privacy breaches, where attackers increasingly use AI for sophisticated tactics.

Every Play Store app faces over 10,000 safety checks before and after launch, with generative AI aiding human reviewers in spotting complex patterns faster.

Google stresses user safety features such as parental controls, data safety labels, and app badges to promote informed choices.

Enhanced Protections and Key Stats

Google integrated advanced AI models to boost detection, blocking 255,000 apps from excessive sensitive data access, down sharply from prior years.

Anti-spam measures stopped 160 million fake ratings and reviews, averting an average 0.5-star drop from “review bombing” attacks.

For families, new safeguards block kids from gambling or dating apps, building on existing age-appropriate content tools.

Beyond the Play Store, Google Play Protect scans 350 billion apps daily across all sources, identifying 27 million new malicious sideloaded apps in 2025, up from 13 million in 2024 as threats shift outside official channels.

Enhanced fraud protection expanded to 185 markets and 2.8 billion devices, blocking 266 million risky installs from 872,000 unique high-risk apps.

In-call scam defenses now prevent disabling Protect during calls to thwart social engineering.

Developers benefit from tools like Play Policy Insights in Android Studio for real-time policy feedback and expanded Play Integrity API with hardware signals for threat detection, handling 20 billion daily checks.

Android 16 adds automatic tapjacking protection against ad fraud, while broader verification rolls out to curb anonymous repeat offenders.

These stats highlight proactive defense evolution amid rising AI threats, with Google committing to further investments for a trusted ecosystem. Users should enable Play Protect for optimal safety.
