Franklin Lakes went live on Bergen County Fiber on Feb. 17. County Executive James J. Tedesco, III announced the connection.

The publicly owned fiber-optic system now serves municipal operations, schools, libraries, and first responders. This connection should slash telecommunications costs for taxpayers while boosting service speed and reliability across the borough.

Bergen Fiber started as a shared services initiative. The system provides scalable bandwidth, secure data transport, and improved connectivity for public safety communications and municipal administration.

“Bergen Fiber is the kind of infrastructure that doesn’t always make headlines, but it makes a real difference every single day,” said James J. Tedesco, III, in a BergenCountyNJ.gov press release. “Franklin Lakes coming online is another step toward a fully connected county — improving reliability, enhancing security, and delivering long-term value for taxpayers.”

Mayor Charles Kahwaty said the connection strengthens municipal operations. “Joining Bergen Fiber strengthens the reliability of our municipal operations while delivering meaningful long-term savings for our taxpayers,” said Kahwaty. “This partnership with the County gives Franklin Lakes a more dependable and cost-effective network to support the services our residents rely on every day.”

Commissioner Tracy Silna Zur praised the expansion. “By creating a countywide network, we are strengthening communication between municipalities and County agencies while controlling costs and improving service delivery,” said Silna Zur. “Franklin Lakes coming online is another important milestone in building a more connected Bergen County.”

The Bergen County Board of Commissioners has backed the continued expansion as part of their infrastructure strategy. Dozens of facilities across the region now link to the system — borough halls, libraries, and utilities authorities among them.

More towns keep joining. Municipalities interested in participating can contact BOReilly@BergenCountyNJ.gov for information.
