Canadian tourism continued to fall in January

Tourism from Canada to the U.S. continued to tank in January, with return trips from the U.S. by car or by air down 24% as compared to January 2025, according to Statistics Canada.

By contrast, return trips by air to Canada from other countries rose 11% as compared to the previous January.

This isn’t good news for New Hampshire — Canada is by far the largest source of international tourism to the Granite State.

Last summer, Taylor Caswell, then commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Business and Economic Affairs, estimated that Canadian tourism to New Hampshire was down by almost one-third from the year before. That trend does not seem to have changed.

Canadians have been put off by President Donald Trump’s continued comments about taking over Canada and making it the “51st state,” as well as news of harsh anti-immigration raids in the U.S. and economic tariffs aimed at Canada.
