Relief efforts continue as valley remains without water service

SHENANDOAH – Community efforts to support folks in the Shenandoah Valley continued Wednesday as the area remained without reliable, clean water service.

A coalition of businesses led by Shenandoah-based Ateeco., Inc., makers of Mrs. T’s Pierogies, donated and distributed bottled water throughout the day Wednesday and additional distributions are planned Thursday.

“During times like these, our priority is supporting our neighbors,” said Meghan Heim with Mrs. T’s. “We are grateful to our community partners who came together quickly to help make this effort possible.”

Pallets of water were donated in partnership with Wegmans and Niagara Bottling. Wegmans has a distribution center at Highridge and Niagara is in the Humboldt Industrial Park near Hazleton.

Water was delivered to and distributed from Shenandoah Borough Hall, the William Penn Fire Co., and the Defender Hose Co. at Turkey Run.

Ateeco extended thanks to Mark Mikita, Transportation Manager at Wegmans, for his logistical leadership in ensuring a smooth delivery; Michelle Mariano, Plant Operations Specialist at Niagara Bottling Hazleton; Mike Joyce, Executive Director, and Becky Woods, Director of Marketing & Programs at Schuylkill United Way; and Tom Twardzik, President and second-generation owner of Mrs. T’s Pierogies, along with Mrs. T’s employees who assisted in unloading and distributing the water.

In addition to that effort, other businesses and organizations across northern Schuylkill County have been stepping up for those in need.

Cornerstone Health distributed bottled water Thursday afternoon on South Main Street while SCI Mahanoy donated water to the Shenandoah Manor Nursing Center.

Also contributing to relief efforts was M&T Bank, Boyer’s Food Markets, Redner’s Warehouse Markets, and Fabrizio’s in Ashland.

Aqua Pennsylvania is also providing water tankers at Shenandoah Borough Hall with drinkable water.
