Woman accused of biting federal agent’s fingertip off after Alex Pretti shooting federally indicted

A St. Paul woman accused of biting off a Homeland Security agent’s finger during protests on the day of Alex Pretti’s death has been federally indicted.

Claire Louise Feng, 27, was charged by a Minnesota federal grand jury with inflicting bodily injury on a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent on Jan. 24.

According to court documents, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and HSI officers were trying to establish a secure perimeter near Nicollet Avenue between 27th and 28th streets in Minneapolis following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti.

While a CBP officer tried to arrest a person who threw a chemical canister toward federal law enforcement, Feng tackled the CBP officer, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

An HSI agent then took Feng to the ground, which is when she allegedly bit off, severing the tip of his right ring finger and leaving the bone exposed.

The case is currently being investigated by DHS, ICE and HSI.

Another woman, Emily Duchateau Baierl, was also charged with one count of forcibly assaulting a federal officer and committing bodily harm.

Prosecutors say that an officer tried to arrest Baierl after seeing her throwing things at law enforcement, including throwing chemical agents that law enforcement had used back at them.

A struggle ensued and the agent tried to take off Baierl’s mask, during which Baierl “forcibly bit” the agent’s middle finger. The agent was wearing gloves, but was still injured, court documents say.
