Money Minute: Love scamsMoney Minute: Love scams
Feb. 14 should be a time of love, but it can break your heart and wallet.
“Valentine’s Day becomes a primary time to launch cybercrime scams,” said Eric O’Neill, a former FBI counterintelligence operative, who knows how to spot these scammers so much that he’s written a book about it.
If you’ve found the perfect love from photos on a dating site, you must proceed with caution.
“In a specific manipulation tactic called ‘love bombing,’ they want to overwhelm you with affection,” O’Neill said. “Cyber criminals try to prey on our need for connection.”
He says they will never meet you in person, never do video calls and keep you in text only.
“They are always trying to reinforce connection and trying to get you to fall in love and feel close to them, feel like you’ve made an incredible friend and maybe your future love interest,” O’Neill said. “It’s all about getting your money; they really don’t want to fall in love with you.”
