An investigation is underway after a deputy-involved shooting left a man dead Tuesday night in Duluth.

St. Louis County Sheriff Gordon Ramsay says a deputy tried to stop a man who was driving recklessly along Grand Avenue near 59th Avenue West at around 9:40 p.m. However, instead of stopping, the driver fled.

Deputies were able to stop the man’s vehicle a short time later in the 7900 block of Grand Avenue, but then things went sideways.

Authorities haven’t yet said what happened immediately after the car stopped, but at some point, two deputies fired gunshots at the driver — the only person in the vehicle. Ramsay says deputies then provided aid but the man died at the scene.

Ramsay says a handgun was recovered from the man’s car but it wasn’t immediately clear if he brandished or fired it during the incident.

Neither of the deputies was hurt.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now investigating what happened.

More details, including the names of the driver and the involved deputies, are expected to be released at a later time.
