Dispute over ICE presence at Minneapolis City Hall

On Monday, Minneapolis City Council member Soren Stevenson took to social media to tell people about five Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) vehicles that were parked in a bike lane and Minneapolis police parking spots outside of city hall, which he was concerned were breaking the city’s separation ordinance.

He said that he and a few other councilors went outside, and were watching the vehicles and blowing whistles to alert anyone in the area of ICE. After about 45 minutes, the vehicles all left, he said.

He went on to say that he checked with the mayor’s office about the incident, and Mayor Jacob Frey’s chief of staff told him that Border Czar Tom Homan was there for a meeting with the mayor.

However, Stevenson then accused the city of violating the city’s separation ordinance by hosting Homan at City Hall and allowing the vehicles to park there, in his social media post.

The City of Minneapolis refutes this claim, including city attorney Kristyn Anderson saying, “The meeting did not violate the city’s separation ordinance.”

They cite the reason for not breaking the ordinance as being that it was for a meeting, and the ICE agents were not enforcing immigration laws. The ordinance states that “City employees do not have the authority to grant permission for federal agents to enter non-public City spaces for the purpose of enforcing immigration laws.”

The city also says it informed council member Stevenson that the separation ordinance was not broken.
