Marcella’s Appliance Center, a member of AVB’s East Coast affiliate Intercounty Appliance Corp. (IAC), has extended its footprint to New York’s state capital with last month’s acquisition of Cocca’s Appliances in Albany.
The purchase gives Marcella’s, a 69-year-old family business based in nearby Schenectady, a foothold in the capital city and reinforces its position as a premier appliance destination for the region.
The deal brings together two respected family businesses with decades of service to their communities. Since its founding by Frank Cocca in 1981, Cocca’s has built its reputation on a customer-first approach, strong vendor relationships and a hands-on management style that has delivered exceptional service for generations of Capital Region families.
Likewise, Marcella’s, founded in 1957 by John D. Marcella, has grown into one of the region’s most respected appliance retailers, known for its deep product expertise, family values and dedication to customer satisfaction. Led by John, his wife Lori and his grandson John R. Marcella, the company regularly carries over 30,000 square feet of inventory across more than 60 product lines and services what it sells.
“This expansion into Albany allows us to strengthen our presence in the Capital Region and bring our unmatched selection and service to even more customers,” the younger Marcella said, while underscoring the company’s commitment to thoughtful growth.
“Our family has always believed that the success of a business is rooted in the relationships it builds — with customers, employees, and the community,” added his grandmother, Lori. “Frank’s philosophy reflects that same belief, which makes this transition such a natural fit. We’re proud to welcome Cocca’s into our family.”
Upstate Status
The Cocca’s store will become the third Marcella’s-branded showroom. The company previously acquired Adirondack Appliances in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., which has been integrated into Marcella’s Clifton Park location and is managed by a former Adirondack co-owner.
According to Marcella’s Marketing Director Nick Madelone, Cocca’s showroom and signage are presently being updated and additional premium appliance lines and vignettes will be introduced. The company has also created a dedicated welcome page to ease Cocca’s customers through the transition.
For former owner Frank Cocca, the merger leaves his employees and customers in good stead, which had been a succession concern.
“When I began to think about succession planning, my top priority was ensuring that both my loyal customers and my employees would be in good hands,” Cocca said. “Marcella’s reputation for integrity, quality and service made them the natural choice. I know my customers will continue to be cared for, and my employees will have the opportunity to thrive.”
His concern was made clear to Todd Kletter, managing partner of WP Strategic Consulting, who helped facilitate the Cocca and Adirondack deals.
“From the first conversation with Frank to finalizing the details with the Marcellas, our focus was on creating a transition that benefited customers, employees and ownership alike,” Kletter said. “This transaction exemplifies what can be accomplished when two respected family businesses come together with a shared goal of preserving legacy while pursuing growth.”
The acquisition closed on Jan. 19. Terms were not disclosed.
