Jersey Shore Beach Badges Could Soon Be Free for Teens, Veterans
Heading to the Jersey Shore this year? New Jersey lawmakers are considering a new proposal that would give some residents a chance to enjoy the beach for free or reduce pricing. The proposal will also expand the number of eligible military veterans for free or discounted beach badges.

Reports say that the new law will not mandate free beach access for groups state-wide, but it will allow towns the flexibility. But who all qualifies?

If passed, towns can offer free or discounted beach access to teens aged 12 to 17. This will eliminate the cost of beach access for towns that require teens to pay the same as adults. Then, it will expand discounts for U.S. military veterans. Currently, rules limit veterans to specific service requirements for the discount. The new proposal will extend to all veterans as a whole.

Although the new bill will be for the state, it will not require towns to change their current beach fees. Each local town can decide how much of a discount it would like for its beaches.

Beach badges will serve as a big revenue source for the shore towns. Badges help fund lifeguards, repair boardwalk areas, erosion control, and maintenance.

Currently, beach badges vary in price by town. A day pass is only a few dollars across towns, but seasonal passes are also offered. Some beaches are completely free, so be sure to check before heading out to any new beaches in Jersey.

If the new law is passed, Jersey Shore trips will become more affordable across the state. What do you think of the new rule?
