The Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Community and Urban Forestry program will host two Tree Stewards workshops this spring, offering hands-on training in urban tree care and community forestry advocacy.
The first workshop is scheduled for March 30–31, 2026 in New Albany, running 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days at the Floyd County Family YMCA, 33 State St. The second is set for April 9–10 in South Bend, also 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Howard Park, 219 S. St. Louis Blvd.
According to DNR materials, the Tree Stewards program is designed to educate participants on proper tree care and biology, empower residents to advocate for urban forestry in their communities, and connect attendees to local volunteer opportunities. After completing the workshop, participants are asked to put what they learned into practice by completing 15 hours of volunteer service in their local community.
Workshop agendas show sessions focused on topics such as the benefits of trees and the urban forest, tree identification, “right tree, right place” selection, recommended maintenance, pruning basics, tree defects and disorders, and tree planting demonstrations.
DNR notes some sessions may take place outdoors and may involve pruning tools; participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring eye protection and gloves if possible.
Registration and agendas are available through the DNR Community and Urban Forestry program page. DNR officials said they hope to host a central Indiana Tree Stewards workshop in the fall.
