Morris County Highway Closures Begin for Snow Removal, Bridge Work
Lane and shoulder closures started Thursday, Jan. 29, for two Morris County highways. The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced the restrictions stem from snow removal and a bridge replacement that’s kicking off.

I-287’s shoulder shut down in both directions between mileposts 37.26 and 37.56 near Hanover Avenue/CR 650 Bridge. Work continues on weekdays, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the shoulders are scheduled to stay closed for weeks.

Hanover Avenue/CR 650 is losing one lane at a time on the bridge spanning I-287. These restrictions hit both eastbound and westbound traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays for the coming weeks.

Crews will move around on both sides of the roads. Slow down. Stay alert. Delays are coming.

The $17.5 million contract covers replacing the Hanover Avenue/CR 650 bridge in Hanover and Morris Township where it crosses I-287. Engineers plan to strengthen the structure while updating drainage systems, lights, signs, and fences.

Sidewalks get rebuilt, too. Curb ramps will meet ADA requirements once crews finish. Transportation officials say spring 2028 marks the completion date.

These initial closures signal the start of work that will stretch for more than two years. DOT hasn’t released specific closure dates past this initial period.

Anyone driving these routes on weekdays should add extra time. To avoid rush hours, work happens between morning and afternoon.
