Amazon Closes Fresh and Go Locations, Eliminates Over 1,800 Jobs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania

Amazon will cut 871 jobs in New Jersey and 983 in Pennsylvania as it shutters every Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go store in both states. The closures happen April 28. They’re part of a bigger move to shut 72 grocery stores across the country.

Four Fresh stores in New Jersey will close — Eatontown, Lodi, Paramus, and Woodland Park. Six Pennsylvania stores will shut their doors in Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties.

New Jersey loses 417 positions in Bergen County. Passaic County loses 240. Monmouth County sees 141 cuts, Hudson County 44, and 29 are listed statewide, based on filings from the state labor department. Pennsylvania stores closing include Philadelphia, Bensalem, Warrington, Willow Grove, Broomall, and Langhorne.

The e-commerce company said Wednesday it would end operations at physical grocery stores and shift resources toward online delivery services and Whole Foods Market growth. It plans 16,000 total job cuts across all operations.

“While we’ve seen encouraging signals in our Amazon-branded physical grocery stores, we haven’t yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion,” the company said in a statement, according to NJ.com.

Most stores close Sunday, a spokesperson told Bloomberg News. Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology, wrote that most U.S.-based employees get 90 days to search for new internal roles.

Workers who can’t find positions elsewhere will receive transition support. This includes severance pay, outplacement services, and health insurance benefits. Officials said they are working to help affected employees land roles across its operations network.

New Jersey opened its first Fresh store in Paramus in 2022. Three more opened in Eatontown, Lodi, and Woodland Park in 2024.

Whole Foods Market will open more than 100 new stores over the next few years. It will grow its Daily Shop format —a smaller concept with grab-and-go meals, coffee, and essentials.

Some Fresh and Go sites will become Whole Foods Market stores, though specifics weren’t announced. New Jersey has 25 Whole Foods stores with four more in planning stages.

Same-Day Delivery service will expand. It now serves more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns. Customers can still shop Fresh online where service is available.
