Multiple rescues at Minneapolis apartment fire
Minneapolis fire officials used ladders to rescue three residents and several pets from a burning apartment building on Wednesday.
Deputy Fire Chief J.R. Klepp said crews arrived to the three-story building on the 1900 block of Thomas Avenue North just after noon and saw smoke pouring from the second floor. One floor above, people were hanging out windows and calling for help.
Teams of firefighters climbed up to the third floor to lower everyone to safety. In addition to the three people, two dogs and “multiple” cats were rescued from the building.
According to Klepp, one victim was found “semi-conscious” inside.
“It’s one of the most difficult things to do, carrying an unconscious patient from the third floor. You have heavy smoke, so zero visibility,” Klepp said. “Crews were able to find the victim very quickly and were able to extricate him from the building — like I said, down the ladders.”
Klepp said one victim was taken to the hospital for burn injuries. One firefighter was also evaluated for a minor injury.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS was there as one resident, William, was reunited with his dog, Roy. He said firefighters had to come get him from the top floor and he was searching for his dog once he got out.
“Found him, thank God for that,” William said. “I appreciate it. Thank you guys, I appreciate it.”
The 11-unit building was deemed uninhabitable, displacing 22 residents, according to the Minneapolis Fire Department. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
