A robbery suspect was fatally shot early Tuesday morning at a gas station in Lakeland, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCS0). Deputies responded to a call just after 3:15 a.m. at the Exxon gas station on Canada Road directly in front of The Lake District, to reports of a robbery and shooting. The Exxon is the only Lakeland gas station located next to I-40 that remains open 24 hours.

In a public statement by the SCSO, they said deputies arrived quickly. “Patrol deputies arrived on scene within three minutes of being dispatched. Upon arrival, they discovered an adult male suspect suffering from gunshot wounds lying in the front doorway of the gas station.” The suspect was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

By 6:30 a.m., multiple Shelby County Sheriff’s Office patrol cars, as well as other law enforcement vehicles, remained on site as investigators continued to process the scene. Officials have not released additional details, citing an ongoing investigation.

Lakeland Currents reached out to Mayor Josh Roman about the shooting and he emphasized how rare a crime like this occurs in Lakeland. “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with all those affected. Lakeland is one of the safest West Tennessee communities due to our strong partnership between the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, who work together to keep crime here extremely low,” he said.
