Local prosecutors have now formally requested information from the federal government related to the killing of Renee Good.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office submitted its official requests on Monday, asking federal officials to turn over evidence from the shooting that killed Good by Feb. 17.

Good was shot multiple times and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross on Jan. 7.

While state and local officials responded to that shooting, they’ve maintained that the FBI has excluded them from the investigation and prevented HCAO and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) from accessing evidence.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison called it “unprecedented” for a county attorney’s office to have to formally request evidence and cooperation from federal authorities.

“Federal investigators should already be cooperating with state investigators in a joint investigation into Renee Good’s shooting death at the hands of federal agents. The County Attorney’s Office is sending these letters because the federal government continues not to do so,” Ellison said in a statement.

“I expect the federal government to provide the requested information, documents and physical items to our office,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “The federal government has been clear that they are not conducting an investigation into Renee Good’s death. But we are. We require these records as part of our ongoing thorough investigation into her death at the hands of a federal agent, Jonathan Ross.”

Prosecutors are asking for federal officials to turn over all physical evidence from the scene, videos and pictures taken there, the names of all officers at the scene, statements from those involved, medical records for injuries related to the shooting, and department policies and procedures.

State and local officials have said the lack of cooperation raises concerns over transparency and impartiality in any federal investigation.

Ellison says his office will “do everything in our power” to help HCAO and the BCA conduct its own investigation into Good’s death.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has reached out to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Homeland Security to see if they plan to comply with HCAO’s request. At this time, no response has been received.
