WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate on Friday unanimously approved a resolution honoring the national champion Indiana University football team after the Hoosiers completed an undefeated 16-0 season and won the College Football Playoff title, according to a joint statement from Todd Young and Jim Banks.

The measure, introduced by the two Indiana Republicans, congratulates the Indiana Hoosiers football for winning the College Football Playoff National Championship and calls for an official copy to be prepared for presentation to Indiana University President Pamela Whitten, athletic director Scott Dolson and head coach Curt Cignetti.

“As an IU fan since the Bill Mallory era, I’m proud to lead this Senate resolution celebrating the national champion Indiana Hoosiers,” Young said in the release, thanking players, coaches and staff and calling the season one that “will be cherished in our state for generations.”

Banks, an IU alumnus, said Indiana “is so proud of this team and their historic 16-0 championship season,” adding that “the whole country was cheering” for the Hoosiers as they showed “class, teamwork, and grit,” the release said.

Indiana secured the title with a 27-21 victory over the Miami Hurricanes on Jan. 19, cementing the program’s first football national championship.

The resolution’s preamble highlights several on-field achievements from the championship run, including quarterback Fernando Mendoza completing 16 of 27 passes for 186 yards and scoring a game-clinching fourth-quarter touchdown run, along with defensive lineman Mikail Kamara recording four tackles and blocking a punt that was returned for a touchdown.

It also credits the Hoosiers’ postseason path — including the Big Ten championship and playoff victories in the Rose Bowl and Peach Bowl — and notes that Indiana finished as the Associated Press’ No. 1 team for the first time in school history.

While the resolution is ceremonial and does not carry the force of law, it places the Senate on record formally recognizing the Hoosiers’ undefeated championship season and the players, coaches and staff behind it.
