Memorials for Alex Pretti, Renee Good

A continuous flow of people came to pay their respects to Alex Pretti, who was shot and killed by federal agents on Saturday.

The growing memorial for the 37-year-old VA intensive care unit nurse is at Nicollet Avenue and 26th Street.

Susan Finn, visiting from Maple Grove, says she’d like to see a permanent memorial for Pretti and Renee Good, who was killed by an ICE agent on Jan. 7.

“It would be lovely,” she says. “We have to remember. We have to remember our people who gave their lives.”

The Renee Good memorial is covered with stuffed animals, signs, and flowers.

Signs say, ‘rest in power’ and ‘The world loves you.’

It’s watched over by two people who are using a small fire in a grill to keep warm.

“This city has had a lot to deal with in the past five years,” declares Ryan Vizzions, originally from Atlanta, who’s now living in the metro. “Through George Floyd in the community has dealt with it a lot, and they have a way of honoring the dead and rightly so. I can see the same thing happen here, where Alex was killed.”

At the Alex Pretti memorial, emotions still feel fresh.

“This is really a flashpoint in our country,” Vizzions says. “I think these two killings in Minneapolis are a sign for people that we need to work together and we need to maintain these spaces for the people that gave their lives trying to protect others.”

We asked city officials about any plans to organize a more permanent memorial.

A spokesperson issued this statement, which said in part: “The City’s top priority is to give our community space to grieve and heal. Residents will notice temporary closed parking and shifting traffic lanes near the Alex Pretti memorial. This both ensures emergency vehicles can get through the area and protects those who gather or visit the memorial.”

The statement goes on to say that City leadership is “actively” working on the next steps, including continued community engagement with both memorials.

“That this is something we both have to recognize, and we really have to have talks with all leaders and everyone in the community and in the state and leadership,” said Jesse, a Minnesota National Guard veteran who says he was assigned to two tours in Iraq.

Finn believes a permanent memorial for Good and Pretti would be appropriate.

“So that we remember this time in our history,” she explains. “We can never forget what has happened in Minnesota.”
