New golf performance business to blend simulators, high-tech short-game complex
A new indoor golf performance business in northeast Sioux Falls is nearing its opening.
Iron Range Golf Performance has been developed by co-owners and PGA professionals Danny Sinksen and Drew Trautman. It’s located in a northwest Sioux Falls industrial park at 5501 N. Interchange Ave. not far from the new Mapleton Golf Club.
The owners “wanted a place dedicated to performance, dedicated to helping our golf community here in Sioux Falls get better, and we know with what we’re building, we’re going to be able to do that,” Trautman said. “The scale is pretty vast.”
The 10,000-square-foot building includes a “world-class short-game complex” spanning 3,000 square feet.
“With that, we have seven hole locations,” Trautman said. “Outside of the grass being artificial, it’s built like a real putting green — slope, undulation, different breaks — so you have every ability to work on any putt or chip you could possibly imagine.”
The course reacts “like you’re outside, not like you’re hitting on concrete, but like you’re hitting on a real course,” Sinksen added.
The closest comparable facility is in the Twin Cities, they said.
Iron Range Golf Performance also includes five Trackman golf simulators, which offer play on thousands of golf courses and were chosen for their performance metrics.
“If there’s a student struggling with a certain shot or movement or pattern, we can create those shots on Trackman so they’re able to practice specific things,” Trautman said. “Every shot they hit in our facility is tracked in the app.”
That will allow players to analyze their shots and recognize trends that lead to errors, he said.
“We could be giving lessons in any (simulator), we could have daily challenges, practice plans, basically like a guideline to actual improvement as opposed to blindly hitting balls,” Sinksen said. “You can go in and just hit, too, but I think having a pathway to all this is something golfers will really value to get the most out of their time at the practice facility.”
One of the bays will be outfitted for club fitting; Iron Range plans to offer full-service fitting and repair along with a small retail presence.
“We really want to be a one-stop shop when it comes to golf performance in Sioux Falls,” Trautman said.
The plan is to open the first week in February.
The business model will be membership-based and will offer lessons. There will be select public hours. Sign up through ironrangegolf.com.
“I feel like it’s accessible from anywhere,” Sinksen said. “It’s an up-and-coming area, that north part of town, but we think it’s extremely accessible.”
When it comes to indoor golf in Sioux Falls, there are a growing number of options. Multiple simulator-based businesses have opened in the past six months, largely clustered in south Sioux Falls.
Iron Range sees its niche as golf instruction from instructors certified by the PGA with a focus on improved performance.
“When you’re in there, you have us as resources at your disposal every time you come in,” Trautman said. “As members, you have 24/7 access and … to us, the experience you’re going to get every time you walk in the door will be elevated.”
