17-year-old gets 25.5 years for fatal stabbing

A teen who was certified to be tried as an adult in the murder of 19-year-old Jay’Mier Keymari Givens has been sentenced to 25.5 years in prison.

Jeremy Joe Davila, 17, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in December. He was given credit for 269 days already served.

Davila and a 14-year-old were arrested for the murder in May.

A 911 caller found Givens unresponsive with 22 stab wounds on March 31.

Givens’ brother said Givens was meeting up with two friends, later identified as Davila and the 14-year-old, at a home in St. Paul.

After the arrest, the 14-year-old told investigators that Givens had threatened his girlfriend and her son and later pulled a knife on him. Prosecutors say Davila pulled a knife to defend the 14-year-old and stabbed Givens. This caused Givens to drop his knife, and the 14-year-old said he picked it up and also started stabbing Givens.
