MCCSC schools locked down after reported threat; police checking buildings
Update “Dear MCCSC Community,
This afternoon, we were made aware of a non-specific threat to student safety. Out of an abundance of caution, we immediately initiated our school corporation safety plan and placed all buildings on lockdown shortly after 1:00 p.m. as we initiated all safety protocols and procedures in coordination with local authorities. During this time, instruction proceeded while students remained in securely locked classrooms. At this time, all schools are now clear and are confirmed secure. We want to thank our students, teachers, and staff for their swift response in carrying out our regularly practiced school safety protocols.
The MCCSC takes all reports regarding the safety of our students seriously. As always, if you see something, say something. We appreciate our community members who partner with us to help keep our schools safe. Tips can be submitted to STOPit, linked on our home page (www.mccsc.edu) or use the STOPit app.
Teachers, parents, and students should reach out to their school with any concerns regarding student safety.”
Staff report
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — January 26, 2026
Monroe County Community School Corp. schools were placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after an anonymous caller contacted central dispatch and claimed to be inside a school restroom with a gun, but did not specify which school, according to scanner traffic monitored by The Bloomingtonian.
MCCSC school police began checking schools building by building. As of about 2:32 p.m., officials had not located a weapon or identified an active threat, but schools remained on lockdown while law enforcement worked to clear campuses and confirm students and staff were safe.
A message sent to parents at one MCCSC school said staff and students were directed to keep doors shut and locked “out of an abundance of caution” and to keep students in classrooms while the situation unfolded. “Updates will be made when available,” the message said.
The Bloomingtonian is publishing this information in response to multiple calls from parents seeking confirmation and updates. At this time, there has been no public indication of an active threat, but law enforcement must verify the report before lifting lockdowns.
This is developing.
