  • The Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce yesterday named Hampshire County High Sheriff John F. Boyle as its citizen of the year. Dr. David R. Jackson, Northampton surgeon, was elected president of the chamber.
  • The Hampshire United Way is moving its offices to the second floor of the Hampshire County Chapter of the Red Cross building, spokesmen for the two agencies announced today. The United Way will move from its present quarters at 155 Main St., to the Red Cross’ facilities at 125 State St.

  • Pro-choice activists can expect a storm ahead under the Bush administration, said maverick abortion practitioner Dr. Leroy Carhart. “I think we are looking into a very, very dark future,” Carhart, keynote speaker in an event commemorating the 28th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, told about 100 people in Amherst on Saturday.
  • A proposed subdivision on 57.6 acres in Leeds is moving forward, with the Planning Board scheduled to choose this week one of three plans for developing the land. Preliminary plans for the Beaver Brooks Estates subdivision include three different configurations: a conventional cookie-cutter design for laying out lots and two that would cluster homes to preserve open space.

  • A full-time adviser to assist students in running University of Massachusetts campus radio station WMUA will provide renewed stability for its operations, help meet Federal Communications Commission guidelines and promote participation by students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, according to UMass spokesman Edward Blaguszewski.
  • Julie Costello, a native of Northampton, is the new CEO of the Hampshire Regional YMCA. Costello, 51, comes to Northampton from the Granite YMCA in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she was district vice president.
