  • An area headquarters for Fred Harris’ presidential campaign will open tomorrow at 142 Main St. in Northampton. Russell Carrier and James Aaron will coordinate campaign activities for the former Oklahoma senator. The office will serve the First Congressional District.
  • A coalition of nuclear opponents based in Greenfield this week issued a report critical of the conclusion reached by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission that construction of a twin-reactor nuclear power plant in Montague would have little adverse effect on the environment. The 48-page report was written by the Alternative Energy Coalition.

  • Seven months after a study proposed the city build a parking garage in partnership with the Hotel Northampton, prospects of relieving a parking crunch are still uncertain. Peter Skaza, director of the city’s parking division, said the Hotel Northampton is still negotiating with the mayor’s office about the garage proposal.
  • To show their displeasure with the long-count presidential election, local activists on Inauguration Day will re-enact Shays’ Rebellion, the 18th-century protest led by Daniel Shays of Pelham against unfair government practices. The modern-day “Shaysites,” complete with knee breeches and waistcoats, plan to hold the demonstration in Springfield.

  • It remains unclear if and when Stop & Shop plans to break ground on a supermarket on Route 10 in Easthampton after a Planning Board discussion Tuesday about the project’s permit. In 2010, a neighbor filed a lawsuit to stop the construction, and the plans were held up in a four-year legal battle. That ended two years ago when the suit was dropped.
  • Beneath the turrets of Northampton’s iconic City Hall, a Black Lives Matter banner unveiled this week has drawn both praise and ire. Introduced as part of the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations, the gesture has sparked a vigorous online debate about the movement’s message, with some suggesting the sign is an affront to the city’s Police Department.
