Red Robin To Shutter Clifton Site as Chain Continues Nationwide Closures

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers will close its Clifton location on Route 3 by Jan. 25. This marks the second New Jersey restaurant the chain has shut down in recent months. The company plans to phase out up to 70 locations over five years.

A corporate spokeswoman confirmed the final day of operation. The restaurant sits attached to La Quinta hotel on Route 3 east.

In February 2025, the company announced plans to close about 70 underperforming restaurants over the next five years as it works to pay down debt. The total could be less if business improves. The lease ended for the Clifton location, according to a media representative.

“We’ve enjoyed being part of the local community and look forward to continuing to serve guests at our other New Jersey-based restaurants,” the media rep said, according to NJBIZ.

The Colorado-based chain closed its Rockaway Townsquare mall location in November 2025. That lease also ended.

Founded in 1969, the brand operates roughly 500 restaurants across the U.S. and Canada. The company is known for its burgers, bottomless fries, and family-friendly atmosphere.

Several full-service and casual-dining brands are cutting back their footprints in response to rising costs, shifting consumer preferences, and traffic declines. Denny’s, Outback Steakhouse and Red Lobster have all reduced their presence in recent years.

After the Clifton closure, the chain will continue operating in seven New Jersey locations. Those sites include Brick, Cherry Hill, Deptford, Hamilton, Mays Landing, South Plainfield, and Vineland, according to its website.
