Hacker Pleads Guilty to Stealing Supreme Court Documents, Leaked via Instagram

Nicholas Moore, 24, of Springfield, Tennessee, has pleaded guilty to unauthorized computer access involving multiple U.S. government systems.

The case marks a significant breach of the nation’s highest court’s digital infrastructure and exposes vulnerabilities in government credential management practices.

Supreme Court Filing System Breach

Moore gained unauthorized access to the U.S. Supreme Court’s restricted electronic filing system at least 25 times between August 29, 2023, and October 22, 2023, using stolen credentials of an authorized user.

The filing system is designed exclusively for authorized personnel and contains sensitive court documents, case filings, and judicial information.

Moore frequently returned to the compromised system multiple times on the same day, indicating sustained access and reconnaissance activities.

Most notably, Moore documented his intrusion by capturing screenshots of the Supreme Court filing system interface showing victim details and posting them to his Instagram account @ihackedthegovernment.

This public disclosure of government system access represents a critical operational security failure, as the attacker openly advertised the breach on a social media platform.

Moore employed credential theft as his primary attack vector, compromising authorized user accounts across three separate federal systems.

Between August 17 and October 13, 2023, Moore used stolen MyAmeriCorps credentials to access AmeriCorps systems and extract personal information from an authorized user’s account. He subsequently posted the victim’s personal data to his Instagram handle.

The attacker also compromised a U.S. Marine Corps veteran’s login credentials to access the Department of Veterans Affairs “MyHealthEVet” platform on five separate occasions between September 14 and October 14, 2023.

This breach exposed sensitive medical data, including prescribed medications and intimate health information. Moore posted the veteran’s private health records to Instagram while boasting about gaining access to VA systems.

Moore pleaded guilty to one count of computer fraud, a Class A misdemeanor. He faces up to one year in prison and fines up to $100,000 upon sentencing scheduled for April 17, 2026, before Judge Beryl A. Howell in U.S. District Court, Washington D.C.

The investigation involved the Supreme Court Police Protective Intelligence Unit, the FBI Washington Field Office, the Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, and the AmeriCorps Office of Inspector General.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Borchert and Rami Sibay prosecuted the case for the District of Columbia.

The case underscores persistent vulnerabilities in government credential management and the risks posed when employees’ login credentials are compromised, enabling attackers to access multiple critical systems without triggering additional authentication mechanisms.
