The January 13, 2026, update (KB5073455) has left systems with Secure Launch repeatedly restarting instead of powering off, forcing users to resort to command-line workarounds.
The issue affects Windows 11, version 23H2, devices running the Enterprise and IoT editions with Secure Launch enabled.
Secure Launch is an advanced security feature that leverages virtualization-based security to protect systems from firmware-level threats during startup.
When users attempt to shut down or hibernate their PCs after installing KB5073455, the devices automatically restart instead of completing the shutdown sequence.
Microsoft confirmed the bug on January 15, 2026, acknowledging that no permanent fix is currently available.
The company indicated that a resolution will be included in a future update, but provided no specific timeline.
This leaves Enterprise and IoT edition users in a difficult position, particularly those relying on hibernation to preserve work sessions and battery life on mobile devices.
To successfully power down affected systems, users must bypass Windows‘ standard shutdown procedure.
Microsoft recommends typing “cmd” in the Search bar, opening Command Prompt, and executing the command “shutdown /s /t 0”.
This command-line approach forces an immediate shutdown, circumventing the restart loop triggered by KB5073455.
However, there is no workaround for hibernation. Microsoft advises users to save all work frequently and manually shut down their devices when finished to prevent unexpected battery drain.
The absence of hibernation functionality is particularly problematic for Enterprise users managing laptops and mobile workstations where power preservation is critical.
The bug highlights ongoing challenges with Windows 11’s monthly security updates, especially for Enterprise deployments that use advanced security features such as Secure Launch.
Organizations should consider delaying the deployment of KB5073455 until Microsoft releases a permanent fix.
