Charges: Man fatally shot victim during argument over sweatshirt

A man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting in North St. Paul over the weekend.

Zay’Vion Dontavious Edgerson, 24, faces one count of second-degree murder.

North St. Paul police responded to a shooting at an apartment building on 9th Avenue East on Saturday morning. Court documents state that officers saw blood spatter inside the apartment.

Nehemiah Davis, 19, was found with a gunshot wound to the face. There was a spent shell casing found next to his body. Despite first aid, Davis was pronounced deceased.

A resident of the apartment said she heard a knock on the window and let her daughter’s friends inside. She went back to her bedroom and heard a fight and a pop. The woman said she followed a blood trail to Davis’ body.

According to court documents, police found paperwork in the bedroom addressed to Edgerson.

Surveillance video showed Edgerson, Davis and a third man arriving at the apartment. The third man told police that he was good friends with Davis and the two had recently started hanging out with Edgerson.

Once the three men were inside the apartment building, the witness said Edgerson and Davis got into an argument over a sweatshirt. Edgerson hit Davis and, when Davis tried to hit him back, the man said Edgerson pulled out a gun and shot him.

According to court documents, investigators executed a search warrant on Edgerson’s vehicle and found two handguns and the clothing that Edgerson had been wearing on surveillance video on the morning of the shooting.

Edgerson was arrested at a neighbor’s home and police recovered a third firearm. Court documents state Edgerson admitted the firearms were his.

Prosecutors also noted Edgerson’s prior felony convictions:

Felony domestic assault in December 2025

Possessing a firearm with a scratched-off serial number in May 2023

Possession of a firearm by an ineligible person in April 2023

Fleeing police in a motor vehicle in October 2021

Threats of violence in April 2021 for a gun-pointing incident
