  • Mayor David W. Cramer said yesterday that he is not in favor of legislation proposed by the Hampshire County Commissioners which would create a new Hampshire County planning agency and end the county’s participation in the Lower Pioneer Valley Regional Planning Commission. Speaking at his first press conference, Cramer said he did not think Hampshire County should have a separate planning agency.

  • The City Council last night approved the first nomination to a city position that it has received from the new mayor, David W. Cramer. The council voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Armand N. Moggio of 182 Chestnut St. to the zoning board of appeals. Moggio is a retired plumber.

  • Three sculptors still in the running to win a commission to create a statue of former slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth are expected to unveil scaled-down versions of the statue Jan. 26. The Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue Committee paid each artist $1,000 to come up with a second maquette, or miniature statue, based on feedback from the community and from the committee.
  • Three times in the past 18 months, Jeffrey and Diana Krauth have had very interested buyers for their Beyond Words Bookshop on Main Street, and three times the buyers backed away before closing the deal. Now the couple are talking with some of their employees about buying the store and re-establishing it as a worker-owned collective.

  • Parents as well as teachers and staff favor replacing the Fort River and Wildwood elementary schools with a single new building containing two separate wings for 670 students in kindergarten through Grade 6, according to a survey distributed this month.
  • Nonotuck Community School has agreed to the city of Northampton’s terms, including taking on maintenance costs, and will likely remain in its current space in the former Feiker School building. The School Committee is poised to award a new three-year lease for the former Feiker School building at its meeting Thursday, and Nonotuck submitted the only bid.
