Man arrested outside Hannaford is suspected of making fraudulent purchases

Concord Police have arrested a man suspected of making fraudulent purchases using another person’s debit card.

Teofil Bortos, 46, was arrested Monday and charged with four counts each of identity fraud and forgery, both felonies. He also faces four counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, one count of disobeying a police officer and one count of false report to law enforcement, according to the Concord Police Department.

On January 9, police were notified of an instance of debit card fraud at the Hannaford grocery store on Fort Eddy Road. The victim reported that someone had been using his debit card for purchases and cash withdrawals — despite the victim having the physical card with him during the time of the purchases.

Evidence led to a male suspect who investigators believe used multiple credit and debit cards to make eight different transactions, according to police. The same suspect made fraudulent transactions at other stores in New Hampshire, evidence showed.

On Monday, a Concord police officer observed the likely suspect in a dark colored SUV at Hannaford and made contact after he left the store. Police arrested Bortos after he provided a New York State driver’s license that did not match his identity.

Bortos is now being held in preventative detention at the Merrimack County House of Corrections. He is expected to be arraigned in Concord District Court on Tuesday.
