A day after Minnesota United’s head coach left for a new job, his replacement is officially set.
MNUFC Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Khaled El-Ahmad announced Monday that Cameron Knowles will take over as head coach of the team.
Knowles joined Minnesota United in 2021, serving as a video analyst before rising to become the first head coach of MNUFC2. In 2024, he served as MNUFC’s interim coach and led the team to a 2-0-1 start before moving into a first-team assistant role.
Before his time in Minnesota, Knowles spent nine years with Portland Timbers and made 103 appearances during his eight-year professional playing career.
The New Zealand native now gets a shot to permanently lead the Loons as they enter their 10th MLS season.
“Cameron is the right leader for this moment in our club’s journey,” El-Ahmad said. “He has grown with this organization, understands our players, our culture, and our standards, and has consistently demonstrated the ability to develop people, build strong teams, and compete at a high level. We believe in Cameron, we believe in this squad, and we are excited about the future we are building together.”
“I would like to thank Dr. McGuire, Shari Ballard and Khaled El-Ahmad for the incredible opportunity to lead this team. Minnesota United is a fantastic organization with a strong group of players and a loyal following. I hope to build on the success the club has achieved over the years,” Knowles said in a statement.
He replaces Eric Ramsay, who left to join West Brom after two years leading the Loons.
