Major Progress Reported on New Canada Road Expansion in Lakeland

Lakeland officials say the long-awaited New Canada Road expansion is firmly underway, with construction crews clearing substantial portions of trees along the future four-lane route. The transformational infrastructure project, more than two decades in the making, began active construction in October 2025.

The upgraded roadway will establish a new four-lane corridor stretching from north of I-40 at Beverle Rivera Drive to Highway 70. Designed to enhance safety, alleviate congestion, and accommodate Lakeland’s projected growth over the next 20 years, the project represents one of the city’s most significant transportation investments in recent history.

The majority of the project is funded through a federal grant that covers 80% of the total cost. The remaining 20% will be paid through a local match, supported in part by a USDA Rural Development loan. Lakeland’s portion of the funding is included in the Fiscal Year 2026 General Fund budget.

Crews have cleared many areas across lakeland for the future roadway including all the way to canada road and memphis arlington road.

According to Emily Harrell, Interim City Manager and Lakeland City Engineer, the contractor is constructing New Canada Road in phases, beginning near the mixed-use Ashmont development at Davies Plantation Road and Canada Road.

“After they finish hauling trees and mulch, they will stabilize the disturbed areas. They will then focus on completing the area in front of Ashmont,” Harrell said.

Work will continue toward Highway 70, where tree clearing has already taken place. The next phases include grading and utility installation, followed by curb, gutter, and asphalt placement for each segment.

“Traffic will not be shifted onto the new road until late 2027,” Harrell added.

To keep residents informed, the City of Lakeland has launched a dedicated text-alert program through its new mass notification system. Residents can subscribe to receive project updates by visiting the city’s website at lakelandtn.gov/525/Mass-Notification-System.
