Tennessee Highway Patrol District 4 Headquarters Under Construction

Construction activity behind the Sonic Drive-In along U.S. Highway 64 has drawn attention from Lakeland residents and motorists in recent months. The development, previously reported by Lakeland Currents, is now officially underway as the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) moves forward with construction of its new District 4 Headquarters.

The new facility is located directly off Highway 64 on a long-vacant lot behind Sonic at 9696 U.S. 64. Designed to serve as the central operations hub for THP District 4, the headquarters will encompass 23,233 square feet and carries a construction value of $10.75 million. District 4 serves seven counties in Southwest Tennessee, including Shelby County.

Lakeland-based architectural firm Renaissance Group is handling the design and development of the state-of-the-art facility on behalf of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Project renderings reflect a modern headquarters designed to meet the operational and administrative needs of the district as West Tennessee continues to grow.

Construction officially began following a Notice to Proceed issued on June 9, 2025, and equipment is now actively on site. The project is scheduled for completion by September 2, 2026. Once finished, the new Lakeland headquarters will replace the district’s current location at 6348 Summer Avenue in Memphis.

In recent months, the Tennessee Highway Patrol has maintained a heightened enforcement presence throughout the Memphis area and surrounding regions. Increased traffic enforcement and crime reduction initiatives have led to noticeable decreases in excessive speeding and certain criminal activities, making THP’s role more visible to residents, visitors, and drivers traveling through the region.

While the City of Lakeland is not financially contributing to the construction or ongoing operation of the facility, local officials have expressed strong support for THP’s expanded presence in the community. The new headquarters represents a significant investment in regional public safety infrastructure and further positions Lakeland as an emerging center for essential government services in West Tennessee.
