An overnight fire on Summit Avenue in St. Paul seriously injured one person.

According to the St. Paul Fire Department, firefighters responded to a fire at 12:36 a.m. on the 400 block of Summit Avenue and, upon arrival, found a fire in a three-story apartment and condo building.

Firefighters were able to quickly find and control the flames, which were contained to a room in an apartment where they started.

One person in that unit was taken to the hospital in critical condition. No one else was injured, and the other dwellings in the building were not damaged and are expected to be livable, the press release says.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire department says it is unclear if smoke alarms were in the apartment, but reminds people to make sure those are installed in all sleeping areas and to ensure they are working, especially as fire risks can increase in the winter.
