A person is dead after their car was hit by a train in Coon Rapids on New Year’s Day.
At about 3:45 p.m., officers with the Coon Rapids Police Department responded to the area of 119th Avenue Northwest and Northdale Boulevard Northwest for a reported car struck by a freight train.
Police arrived and found that a single vehicle with one occupant had been hit by the train. Authorities say that the person was extricated from the car and brought to the hospital.
A spokesperson for BNSF stated that the person later died from their injuries and that no crew members were injured. The spokesperson added that the crossing is equipped with gates, lights and bells
The Coon Rapids Police Department and Anoka County Sheriff’s Office are investigating what led up to the crash.
