NJ Transit Requires Photo ID for Discount Riders Starting Wednesday

NJ Transit will require riders using the Reduced Fare Program to show a photo identification card starting Jan. 1. Non-photo cards? They won’t work anymore for seniors, people with disabilities, and active military members who ride buses, trains, and light rail at discounted prices.

All non-photo Reduced Fare IDs will become invalid after the new year. Riders must apply for the new photo ID card through the transit agency’s website, by mail, or in person at approved locations.

The application needs proof of age or disability. You’ll also need a recent photo. The new photo ID card costs nothing.

Applications can be submitted online through the agency’s website. Mail works too — send it to the NJ Transit Reduced Fare Program. Riders can also visit participating banks, savings and loans, or county offices on aging to process their applications in person.

Students will need a separate NJ Transit Student ID issued through their school to get discounted fares. Regular riders can use standard fare payment methods, which include the FARE-PAY card, ticket vending machines, or station ticket offices.

What counts as identification for eligibility? A driver’s license works. So does a passport or Medicare card for seniors. The new NJ Transit photo Reduced Fare ID will also serve as valid proof once you receive it.

This change ends the agency’s acceptance of non-photo cards. Thousands of riders who depend on reduced fares for transportation across the state will be affected by this policy shift.
