Over six months after his family survived an assassination attempt, Sen. John Hoffman has announced he is running for reelection.
In a Facebook post, Hoffman said he is “seeking re-election to keep leading with dignity.”
“Minnesotans are tired of the vitriol,” he wrote. “We have seen first hand where hate and dehumanization can lead. My family survived it. Leadership matters. Decency matters. Speaking up matters. If you believe in a Minnesota rooted in dignity, compassion, and courage and want to help push back against the noise, your donation makes a difference.”
According to his donation page, Hoffmann is seeking to raise $10,000 by Wednesday.
In the early hours of June 14, Vance Boelter, disguised as a police officer, began shouting and pounding on the door to the Hoffman home in Champlin. When the Hoffmans opened the door, Boelter opened fire, hitting John Hoffman nine times and Yvette Hoffman eight times.
After learning of the shootings, Brooklyn Park officers went to check on Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman. Melissa and Mark Hortman had both been shot and killed.
The officers exchanged gunfire with Boelter, but he escaped. He was later arrested after a 43-hour manhunt.
