Teen charged in Metro Transit bus shooting now charged in Minneapolis murder

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Minneapolis on Dec. 23.

Minneapolis police responded to the shooting in a home on the 1600 block of Thomas Avenue North in the overnight hours of Dec. 23. They found an 18-year-old who had been shot five times; the man later died.

Multiple witnesses identified the shooter to investigators and said he and the victim were having a conversation before the shooting. According to the juvenile petition, the witnesses heard the victim ask the shooter if he was one of the people who were involved in a separate shooting. The shooter denied involvement, and then the witnesses heard gunshots.

The 17-year-old and his girlfriend left the home directly after the shooting, the witnesses told police.

The teen was arrested at his girlfriend’s home. Investigators initially found two semi-automatic pistols and extended magazines.

The teen’s girlfriend told police that she and the teen came home after the shooting and he put his handgun in the laundry basket, where it was later found by investigators, court documents state. She added that the teen admitted to her that he shot the victim.

Court documents state that the teen is also charged in the Dec. 19 shooting that occurred on a Metro Transit bus. One of the firearms recovered by investigators matched both the casings from the homicide and the bus shooting.

The teen had also been on probation for an attempted murder at the time of the two shootings, with a warrant status issued earlier in December.
