Minneapolis police responded to reports of gunshots on the 2900 block of Emerson Avenue North just before 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 10. There, they found a man with life-threatening gunshot wounds. The man, identified as Ty’Waan Robinson, was brought to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

According to a criminal complaint, witnesses told investigators that Robinson was walking with his girlfriend when they were approached by two people dressed in black. One ran off and the other drove away in a white SUV.
Surveillance video showed Robinson and his girlfriend being approached by two people who got out of a white SUV. The driver was seen in a physical altercation with Robinson, court documents state. The passenger of the SUV approached them and Robinson appeared to run away. The video showed the passenger raise his arm in Robinson’s direction before a muzzle flash was seen.
An autopsy showed that Robinson had been shot five times, including in his arm, side and back.
According to court documents, the SUV was found to be registered to Childress’ mother.
Investigators learned that Robinson and his girlfriend, Childress’ sister, had an extensive domestic violence history and there was a domestic abuse no contact order between them, court documents state. The woman told investigators that Robinson had assaulted and choked her the night of the shooting and that she had called her mother to tell her what happened.
She added that later, she was walking with Robinson when her two brothers arrived. One of her brothers started fighting Robinson, and Childress shot and killed him. The woman denied calling her brothers to the scene.
Childress’ brother told investigators that he and Childress were with their mother when their sister called. The two men went to fight Robinson and drove around looking for him. The man said he saw Childress with a gun and told him they were just going to fight and that a gun wasn’t needed. The man later got out of the SUV to fight Robinson and then saw Childress shoot him four or five times, he told police.
Childress turned himself in on Dec. 16. He told investigators that after learning Robinson had assaulted his sister, he and his brother went to find them. According to court documents, he admitted to shooting Robinson, saying he was “trying to protect [his] sister.” He claimed he blacked out during the shooting and didn’t remember how many times he shot Robinson.
Prosecutors note that Childress has “an extensive criminal record,” prohibiting him from possessing firearms. His convictions include first-degree burglary, first-degree aggravated robbery and simple robbery.
