Bloomington, Indiana – December 25, 2025
These are some of the best images made by The Bloomingtonian’s Jeremy Hogan in 2025, but they are far from the full picture. Reviewing the year’s work was overwhelming at times — a reminder of how quickly the months moved, and how much happened in between.
From the first snow that buried Kirkwood Avenue to late-year flurries on campus, 2025 unfolded in Bloomington as a year of extremes and endurance. The Bloomingtonian’s Photos of the Year document a community shaped by weather and consequence: winter storms that shut down downtown, spring flooding that transformed Cataract Falls, and tornado damage that left the Clear Creek post office in rubble and South Walnut littered with debris.
The year also brought quieter losses, including the visible toll of avian influenza near Goose Pond, and the daily realities of life without housing — portraits made in rain, cold and uncertainty.
Still, the story of 2025 was not only hardship. It included ceremony and celebration: dancers and singers at Indiana University’s powwow, families lining the streets for the Fourth of July, and the opening of Hopewell Commons Park. Civic life was on display, too — from a courthouse candlelight vigil to a packed Statehouse hallway opposing redistricting.
Sports and spectacle cut through as well, with IndyCar and IMSA speed at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and an Indiana football season compelling enough to bring a national TV crew to Kirkwood Avenue. And above it all, the aurora borealis glowed over rural Monroe County — an unexpected reminder that even in turbulent years, beauty still finds its way in.
The Bloomingtonian will publish additional photo galleries in the coming days, including separate collections focused on IU football, protests, and a visual recap of what we saw outside President Donald Trump’s inauguration last January.
