Minnesota agriculture officials have a message to anyone taking down their Christmas tree: Do it properly to protect the environment from pests.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture says the festive foliage brings joy to many during the holiday season but can also hide dangerous pests, invasive species and diseases, which can then impact other trees and landscapes.
With that in mind, officials ask residents to dispose of holiday greenery in the following ways:
Curbside tree collections or designated drop-off sites.
Burning.
Trash cans for wreaths and small decorations.
Officials ask residents to not toss trees or greenery into the backyard woods or residential compost piles, as that can allow pests and diseases to spread.
The state has a map of yard waste compost locations here.
Anyone who suspects their holiday decorations may be infested with an invasive insect or disease is encouraged to call the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Report a Pest line at 1-888-545-6684, reportapest@state.mn.us, or through the online reporting form.
