Local law enforcement joins holiday impaired driving crackdown

As Arkansans gather for holiday celebrations, local and state law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols in an effort to keep impaired drivers off the road. The Marion County Sheriff’s Department, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department and other local law enforcement agencies are participating in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which runs through New Year’s day. The enforcement effort is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Arkansas Highway Safety Office and law enforcement agencies across the state.
Officials say the winter holidays are among the most dangerous times of the year for motorists due to an increase in alcohol-related crashes. Between 2019 and 2023, 4,931 people were killed nationwide in December crashes involving an impaired driver. In December 2023 alone, 1,038 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes, with nearly 700 involving drivers who had blood alcohol levels almost twice the legal limit.

“Driving impaired is illegal, endangers everyone on the road, and is never acceptable,” Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Col. Mike Hagar said. “Our troopers, local police and sheriff’s deputies will be out in full force this holiday season to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roads.”

During the enforcement period, deputies with the Marion County and Boone County sheriff’s departments, along with other local law enforcement officers, will be conducting additional patrols and traffic stops aimed at identifying impaired drivers and preventing serious and fatal crashes.

Law enforcement officials are urging residents to plan ahead before attending holiday gatherings. Recommended steps include designating a sober driver, using a taxi or rideshare service, calling a friend for a ride, or helping someone who has been drinking find a safe way home.

Officials also remind the public to report suspected impaired drivers to local law enforcement.

More information on impaired driving is available through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Arkansas Highway Safety Office.
