Seven New Jersey Medical Centers Receive National Safety Recognition From Leapfrog Group

Seven hospitals in New Jersey won the Leapfrog Group’s Top Hospital Award for 2025. The national watchdog announced winners Monday at its Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner.

The group chose 156 facilities across the United States this year — a 16% jump from 2024. The program just hit its 25th year.

Four teaching hospitals and three general care hospitals from New Jersey made the list. Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood, Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, and St. Luke’s Warren Campus in Phillipsburg earned teaching honors. Hackensack Meridian Pascack Valley Medical Center in Westwood, Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, and Shore Medical Center in Somers Point received general recognition.

The award goes to top performers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Winners must have received an “A” in the most recent scoring round.

Top winners have better systems to prevent medication errors. They show higher quality maternity care. Infection rates drop lower, according to Leapfrog. The evaluation looks at medication safety, maternity care, infection prevention, surgical outcomes, nurse staffing, billing ethics, and patient consent practices.

“These honorees are a testament to the extraordinary dedication of these facilities’ entire teams, boards, clinicians, administrators, staff, and community volunteers,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, in a statement, per NJBiz.com. “You don’t achieve results like this without everyone putting their heart into patient care.”

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center received the top rating for the fifth year running. Englewood Health celebrated its eighth time as an award winner.

“This designation does more than recognize our team’s commitment to quality – it also reassures the diverse communities we serve that Bergen New Bridge is here for them, providing all the care they need in the safest possible environment,” said Deborah Visconi, president and CEO of Bergen New Bridge.

Monmouth Medical Center earned recognition for the fourth time. Shore Medical Center President and CEO David Hughes called the award “a tremendous honor.”

“After earning an ‘A’ grade for quality and safety in both the spring and fall, this Top Hospital designation further demonstrates our staff’s dedication to providing the safest, highest-quality experience for our patients,” said Hughes, according to Shore Medical Center.

Participation in the safety survey hit a record high in 2025.
