Public Reviews Traffic and Roundabout Proposals for Highway 70

Community members gathered on December 9 at International Harvester to review and discuss proposed traffic improvements for the Highway 70 corridor, including the possible addition of roundabouts. The meeting provided an opportunity for residents to ask questions, share concerns, and offer feedback on plans that could shape the future of one of the area’s major roadways.

Roundabouts—also known as traffic circles or rotaries—often spark lively debate in Lakeland, and this meeting was no exception. City staff, elected officials, and representatives from OHM Advisors, the engineering firm assigned to the project design, were on hand to present information and respond to public input.

During the presentation, attendees were shown detailed renderings of proposed Highway 70 interchanges, along with a flythrough video illustrating potential future improvements. The video, which you can watch above or by clicking here, offered a visual overview of how the corridor could look once recommended changes are implemented.

Project materials explained that the Highway 70 Corridor Study is intended to “develop recommended roadway and intersection improvements that will be implemented in future construction.” According to the design team, the proposed concepts and flythrough video were developed based on feedback from an earlier online survey, where residents expressed safety concerns and shared ideas for improving traffic flow along the corridor.

In addition to the presentation, participants were invited to complete a questionnaire to further share their opinions and priorities. City officials emphasized that public input remains a critical part of the planning process as the study moves forward.

The Highway 70 Corridor Study is still in the planning phase, and no final decisions have been made. Feedback gathered from the December 9 meeting and related surveys will help guide future recommendations aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and overall traffic operations along Highway 70.
