A man, accused of trying to shoot his mother in St. Paul, has been sentenced in federal court.
Elijah Lowe, 23, was sentenced to 108 months(9 years) in federal court after entering a guilty plea.
According to court records, St. Paul police were called to a shooting across the street from Metro State University around 12:30 p.m. on May 1. The school went into lockdown.
As officers were investigating the situation, a woman, Lowe’s mother, approached officers, saying her son was the one who had been shooting.
Lowe’s mother said they had gotten into an argument earlier that day and she told him to leave her home and not to return.
Lowe’s mother said she later left the building in her SUV when she saw her son again, this time in the parking lot. She again yelled at him not to go home, after which Lowe began to shoot at her, striking the vehicle, but not injuring her.
While investigators were examining the SUV, they found Lowe arguing with his mother and arrested him. He had an empty handgun magazine in his possession.
A handgun with a trigger activator was found inside a grill nearby — it was missing its magazine.
While speaking with investigators, Lowe admitted to shooting at his mother and said the handgun was his and that he had tried to hide it in the grill.
Originally facing state charges, Lowe’s case in Minnesota was dismissed after federal charges were placed against him for the same crime.
