Charges: Armed man threatened neighbors before officer shot at him

A man whom a Minneapolis officer shot at has been charged with assaulting his neighbors.

Hanun Mohamed Awow, 26, faces two counts of second-degree assault.

Minneapolis police responded to a report of someone pointing a gun at the caller’s mother on the 400 block of 31st Street East just after midnight on Thursday. When they got to the scene, officers saw Awow, who appeared to be holding a gun.

An officer shot at Awow but missed.

According to court documents, a gun was found in the area where Awow was standing.

Officers spoke with a woman who was being dropped off by a friend and saw Awow acting erratically. She waited for him to go inside his apartment before walking to her own apartment, but shortly thereafter realized she forgot her phone in her friend’s car.

The woman’s friend was knocking on apartment doors to return the cell phone, which caused Awow to come out of his apartment. Awow asked the woman who was knocking on doors and said he had a gun, court documents state. While the woman tried to explain the situation, Awow came outside with a gun.

The woman said she saw Awow point the gun at her and heard a click, according to court documents. She hid behind a nearby car.

The second victim, a man, said he told Awow to calm down, causing Awow to point a gun at him. The man believed Awow was intoxicated, according to court documents.

In an interview with investigators, Awow said he had a gun, but denied threatening anyone with it. He did admit to drinking before the incident.

Awow denied having a gun at the time police arrived at the scene, “however, that is contradicted by the physical evidence at the scene,” court documents state.
