Union County Performing Arts Center Receives $497,500 Grant for Economic Growth

The Union County Performing Arts Center got a $497,500 grant through Phase II of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s Activation, Revitalization, and Transformation Program. Officials picked 39 recipients out of 109 who applied.

The A.R.T. initiative draws support from the federal American Rescue Plan. It identifies towns that build arts and cultural hubs within their neighborhoods and counties. These grants aim to boost foot traffic, activate public areas, and spark lasting economic recovery.

The money will help more programs, such as the Sensory Friendly Theater series. This series provides inclusive performances for residents of all ages who have sensory sensitivities. It will also support public events, learning opportunities, and efforts that draw crowds into Rahway’s entertainment district, according to the Union County Board of County Commissioners.

“This grant enables us to grow in ways that directly benefit our community, from expanded performances to new educational and engagement opportunities that welcome everyone into our theaters,” said Danni Newbury, Executive Director for UCPAC, in a news release.

“UPAC is a pillar of creativity and connection in Union County, and this award reinforces the incredible work they do year-round,” said Lourdes M. Leon, Commissioner Chairwoman of Union County.

The theater started in 1928. Back then, people knew it as the “Rahway Theatre.” It held music, vaudeville, and silent movie showings before moving into the “talkie” era of productions with sound. Ownership changed hands several times. The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders renamed it “The Union County Arts Center” in 1985.

The venue now appears in both state and national registers for historic places. Rahway’s cultural hub has both a Main Stage at 1601 Irving St. and Hamilton Stage at 360 Hamilton St.
